The Barangay NutriFest in New Barili was successfully held last July 9, 2019 at the multi-purpose covered court. In fact, it is one of the major events that the team of medical students organized for the 4th exposure in the community. The very aim of this activity was to gather as many residents as possible from the different puroks of the barangay and become an avenue for the team to conduct major health teachings. Like any other event, it started with a prayer, opening remarks and then the health teaching proper. The attendees were informed by one of the CHP heads on Water, Mr. Mark Kenneth Narca on the proper ways to perform basic water purification techniques such as boiling, solar disinfection, and chlorination. Afterwards, questions from the community people were entertained, followed by a post-test.
Next, a hypertension awareness session was given by Mr. Dwight Christian Genturalez. Just like the previous activity, a pre-test and post-test were also given to the attendees, only this time, through a game of "Tama o Mali". The speaker highlighted the basics of hypertension, its risk factors, prevention and some common misconceptions. A mass BP taking was also initiated during the event, for purposes of casefinding on hypertension and referral to the RHU, if necessary.
After all the teaching and learning, since the event is a "fest" afterall, comes the more fun side of it. Games that require teamwork and cooperation among the players were also organized, which are "Moving Ihaw", "Pepino Monster", Scoop-it-up, "Monggun", "Spin and Flick" and "Basura mo, itapon mo."
As the people were invited prior to the day of the fest, they were also instructed to bring-and-share something for lunch and to avoid the use of si
ngle-use plastics and disposable utensils to minimize waste. Hence, the games were followed by a feast, and then the closing remarks and awarding of winners. Needless to say, though there were difficulties and unexpected changes, the event was able to serve its purpose and more importantly, to bring together the people of New Barili as one.
